What is a Steel Building Garage?

What is a steel building garage?  Everyone knows what a garage is right? But did you know that the word garage, was introduced to English in 1902!   It originates from the French word garer, meaning shelter.

Residential garages typically have space for one or two cars, although three-car garages are used. Garages normally have a wide door which can be raised to permit the entry and exit of a vehicle, and then closed to secure the vehicle. Garages are also used for a variety of projects including painting, woodworking and assembling of projects.

HISTORY

The common term for these structures in the first decades of the 20th century was motor house. Many garages from before 1914 were pre-fabricated.  The style was usually in keeping with that of the house and its locality, however, they were mainly of timber construction and few have survived!

Cars really took off after the passing of the Federal Road Act in 1916 and the Federal Highway Act in 1921.  Early Garages looked like carriage houses attached to the home, with a gable roof and masonry.

Modern garages are a far cry from the converted carriage house in which the first cars were stored. Over the last century, garages have evolved from an external necessity to an integral part of our homes.

Garages are now used widely for so much more:

  • Storage
  • Expansion
  • Practice
  • Entrepreneurship

Over 1 in 2 homeowners want a garage that their neighbours envy!!

What is a Steel Portal Framed Building?

What is a steel portal framed building you may ask?  In simple terms, they are low-rise structures consisting of rafters and columns.   These common structures are widely used in the UK.  It is estimated that 50% of constructional steel used is in erecting steel portal framed buildings.

What is a steel portal framed building

Steel Portal Frame Building

Steel portal framed buildings

As mentioned above these structure consist of columns and rafters.  These are then connected to moment-resisting connections for super strength.  As a result, they are constructed bay by bay which make them very fast to erect on site.  They were first developed in the 1960s, and have now become the most common form of construction.

Portal frame construction is therefore typically seen in warehousesbarns and other places where large, open spaces are required at low cost and a pitched roof is acceptable.

Why is using steel framed portal buildings a popular choice?

Due to the design, this type of building is highly resistant to lateral and vertical movement.  The frame is a very rigid structure making them very strong and stable.  And lastly,  Portal frames are very simple to erect and can be constructed very quickly.

Two types of roof can be chosen for the portal framed buildings:-

  • Pitched roof symmetric – A pitched roof is a roof that slopes downwards, typically in two parts at an angle from a central ridge.   The ‘pitch’ of a roof is its vertical rise divided by its horizontal span and is a measure of its steepness.
  • A mono-pitched roof –  can be a smaller addition to an existing roof or a stand alone structure with an angled slope.

Portal framed buildings can be clad with all sorts of material but the most popular solution, is insulated or insulated metal cladding.  The lightweight cladding would be carried on sheeting rails spanning between the columns of the portal frames.

Let Sharp and Strong Ltd find the portal frame building for you.   We are experts at constructing the best portal framed buildings for you. Our professional design, planning and installation service will guide you

5 Steel Building Maintenance Tips

Below are 5 Steel building maintenance tips to keep your steel framed structure  in tip-top condition.  There are many benefits of owning a steel building and they require very little up keep. 5 Steel Building Maintenance Tips

Steel buildings have come a long way since they were first manufactured.  High-quality materials, improvements in fabrication and innovative protective coatings to name but a few have improved them no end in recent years.   Steel framed structures have become very popular and desirable in many areas such as commercial, agricultural, industrial and vehicle garages/workshop.

Because of their durability and ability to withstand the elements steel structures need very little maintenance and few repairs. If you invest a little time into properly taking care of your building it will easily withstand the test of time.

Basic Maintenance

  1. Keep your gutters and drains clear of sticks, dirt, leaves or other debris.  Thus, ensuring that the gutters are free from any blockages.  Blockages could easily cause an overflow and potentially stain the sides of your new building.
  2. One of the easiest ways of keeping your beautiful steel or metal framed building looking as good as new is to simply wash the structure using a jet wash.
  3. Looking after your roller shutter doors is also a very simple maintenance step to take which again can be done with a jet wash.  Ensure that you check the working mechanism of the roller, cables and track.  Malfunctioning doors risk letting water into your building. Always ensure the seal at the bottom of your door meets the floor perfectly.
  4. Using a soft bristle brush to keep the roof looking good as long as you don’t mind getting up there of course!
  5. For insulated buildings, ensure no exposure, damage or evidence of moisture exists.

5 Steps to the Basics of Steel Framed Buildings

5 Steps to the basics of Steel Framed  Buildings will help you understand that they are   really quite straightforward.

So, to help you understand the lingo that is used, below is  some basic information regarding the terminology used and the technical information in your steel building quotes.

  1. Orientation

Our steel framed buildings have 4 walls and each wall has its own name. Elevations are the building’s longest walls, Gables are its shortest.

Looking at the front (long) wall of your building and working clockwise around the 4 walls you 5 steps to basic steel framed buildingshave

  • the front elevation
  • the left gable
  • the back elevation
  • the right  gable

Additionally, each wall is divided into bays where a bay is simply the space between a pair of frames.  The bay sizes will depend on how big your steel building is.

  1. Frame Types

The building structure is made up of walls and a roof, a very important part of this structure is its frame as this gives the building its width, length, shape and strength.

There are 3 types of cold rolled steel building frame types and these influence how the building will eventually look.:

  • The Clear Span frame is the most common of all 3 types.  Used in garages, storage units, industrial units office and workshop facilities and also in aircraft hangars.
  • The Mono Slope Frame makes the roof higher on one side than on the other. .
  • The Lean-To Frame is used to extend an existing building. It attaches to – and is supported by – the existing building and provides very useful additional space for offices and storage areas.
  1. Steel Building Framed Openings

Most steel buildings will include roller shutters doors, personal access doors / fire doors and maybe UPVC windows if these are required.  These are known as framed openings and will also come with matching trims to seal out moisture and maintain the interior environment.

  1. Panels

Wall girts and roof purlin  panels attach to make up your building’s walls and roofs.  These panels come in different shapes and sizes and the ones that will work best for you will depend on your building, its location and its use.

Thee panels can be single skin or insulated, with the insulation coming in various thicknesses – if in doubt contact us to discuss what will be the best solution for your new steel framed building.

  1. Insulation

Insulating a building is an important consideration when planning your new project.  It prevents condensation and is a far better heat regulator than wood.  There are several different types of insulation commonly used for metal buildings. Not surprisingly, costs and benefits vary, so it’s important to match insulation characteristics with each building’s size and shape, geographic location, and intended use.

Uninsulated buildings can get very, very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter.

So ,5  basic ideas you would want to be aware of when considering installing a steel building on your property.

Steel Buildings and Snow – What you Should know!

220px-Feathery_Snow_Crystals_(2217830221)Snow and ice can be a real problem for steel buildings.    Here’s what you should know to prepare for the potential heavy weight settling on your roof  which could stay for days!

Steel buildings are strong and durable, with the strength to withstand a heavy amount of snow unlike wooden constructions. All our steel buildings confirm to the British  Standard and are designed for such areas of heavy snow loads.

READY TO GET A QUOTE?

STEEL BUILDINGS DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

There are several aspects to roof design that require some thought when taking potential snow load into accounts.

  • Roof pitch – the higher the roof pitch, the less the snow accumulates. Areas of high snow fall benefit from almost any level of pitch to encourage snow to drop off the roof. Flat roofs may require snow removal service.
  • Wind load – geographical locations prone to heavy snows probably experience high winds as well.
  • Geometric features – some geometric features tend to accumulate heavier snow loads than others. .
  • Accessories – Snow guards, roof cleats, and other roofing accessories can keep snow distribution more even.

Steel buildings  are sturdy, durable structures designed to withstand wind loads and other extreme weather conditions.

Therefore, If your steel building will be located in an area of the country that commonly experiences snow and ice, we will make sure that it will be structurally sound to withstand heavy snow and wind.

Furthermore, it is also important to properly insulate the building, especially if it is going to be occupied by people. Other things to consider are avoiding the use of skylights and  placing most of the windows on the south side of building.

Finally, don’t be tempted to cut corners  and buy cheap steel building as it  could cost you dearly in the long term and could even result in the loss of lives.

Contact us now to get your FREE quotation with the correct snow loads and wind speed taken into account.

Insulated Office Steel Building – Dover

Another successful insulated office steel building  has recently been erected in Dover, Kent for our Client  – Medical engineering Technologies Ltd.  MET Ltd supply specialist testing and validation services with wide-ranging study capabilities.

MET first approached us in July for a quotation for the groundworks and the steel building and after gaining planning approval they placed their order with us for a steel building.   So the building only took 4 weeks from point of placing their deposit to the building turning up on site.

GROUNDWORKS

Firstly, the ground had to be prepared and this was completed by our fantastic team of groundworkers which involved: –

  • Blockwork 24m2
  • 50mm Cellotex insulation 8m x4m= 32m2
  • 4m x 8m concrete 150mm thick RC35 slab: 32 m2 concrete slab
  • 2 layers of reinforcing mesh, tamped finish
  • Damp proof membrane

INSULATED OFFICE STEEL BUILDING

This steel building comprised of : –

Insulated Office Steel Building

Insulated Office Steel Building

  • 4 meters wide X 8 meters long x 2.5 meters to the eaves
  • 2 bays
  • 1 x single personal access door
  • 1 x double steel security door
  • 2 x UPVc windows
  • Sky lights

However, the steel building had to be fully insulated therefore, the steel cladding was 100mm composite panels on the walls and 120mm  composite panels on the roof in Olive Green.

You’ll be reassured to know that we use Kingspan cladding, which carries the relative fire test accreditation and certification, which many suppliers don’t have.  Therefore, the composite is a good choice, as it prevents condensation, is secure and has a 60 minute burn time, should there be any fire walls conditions, in terms of proximity to other buildings, your boundary, roads or footpaths.

In addition, our fully galvanised structures are easy to erect, maintenance free, and are available with an anti-condensation barrier.

Furthermore, all our buildings are engineered to BS6399 and offer a 35 year warranty.
